In March 2020, the Profile Committee completed a draft of the Parish Profile that was ready to be reviewed by the Bishop and the Canon for the Ordinary. However, in view of the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, our Wardens, in consultation with the Bishop, have paused St. Margaret’s rector search process. When the Bishop and our parish leadership determine that the time is right, the Profile Committee will update the Profile as needed and continue.

We are inviting you to complete the Church Assessment Tool (CAT), an on-line instrument that will help gauge the strength, vitality, and trends in our church. The information gained from this assessment will be valuable in writing the parish profile and helping the leader of St. Margaret’s as they make decisions about the future of St. Margaret’s as we call a new rector.

We are asking you to go online by clicking the link provided and tell us about your experiences in and priorities for our church. Please do not discuss the survey or your answers with others as this may influence their answers.
If you need a paper copy, please see a member of the Profile Committee in the Narthex between services and turn your paper survey into the box by the Welcome Center.
NOTE: If there is only one email address for all members of your household, it may be tempting to have one person take the survey on behalf of the family. However, please be sure your spouse and all young adults living in your home have an opportunity to complete the survey. INDIVIDUAL INPUT is key to our gaining insight into overall perceptions and experiences.

We are transitioning into a period of change in our St. Margaret’s faith community; we need to find a new rector to lead us in our faith journeys. The process of calling a rector involves providing information to potential rectors. The profile committee has been tasked with obtaining this information and preparing a parish profile that accurately reflects us a St. Margaret’s. Where do we get this information? YOU!!! This process cannot be done effectively with your valuable insights as the community of St. Margaret’s. Please come to our Town Hall meeting on Sunday, September 8th at 10:00 am in Bristol Hall to learn about this important process and how your involvement is needed to provide an accurate picture of our faith community. Your Wardens are pleased to announce that The Rev. Canon Dr. Marda Steedman Sanborn has been engaged as Interim Priest in Charge, effective August 1st. She will work half time at St. Margaret’s through the month of November while she continues to fulfill her responsibilities as Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese. On December 1st, Marda will continue as Priest in Charge full time. We are very excited for the leadership she will bring to our congregation as we work through the process of calling a new rector. On June 11, the Vestry appointed seven people to serve on a Profile Committee as we begin the process of calling a new rector: Shauna Backus (chair), Mary Feltrup, Andrea Feist, Ed Leonard, Conrad Lee, Dave Hoffmann, and Davindia Steele. Many thanks to all for participating in this process!
The job of the Profile Committee is to collect information about the congregation and write a new church profile. This work will include updating the church history and neighborhood description from the previous profile. Also, the Profile Committee will conduct a survey to measure changes in St. Margaret’s membership and priorities since the previous rector search. Once the profile is complete, the Bishop’s office will review it for use in the new rector search.
The Bishop’s office has asked Paula Franck to act as a consultant and guide our parish through the search process. The wardens are working with closely with her, and she will meet with the Profile Committee to explain the steps to discern the parish’s future direction. We look forward to including your thoughts for the future of St. Margaret’s in our new church profile.
As Saint Margaret’s begins the process of calling our next Rector, we want to keep you informed about that process. Today, we are sharing an article – “Called or Hired?” – about the nature of calling a priest to serve Saint Margaret’s. Additionally, the Vestry has appointed the Profile Committee, which will soon begin it’s work of listening to you and the entire congregation in order to develop the description of who we are as a parish. This will result in a “profile” which will describe our congregation to potential applicants whom God is calling to serve our community.

Called or Hired?
In the search process for a new priest, we use the term “call” rather than “hire” –
so what is the difference? Many of the methods we use are similar to those in secular organizations. We develop a job description that is circulated throughout the church network; review applications; conduct a series of interviews; check references; approve a final candidate; and draw up a contract or letter of agreement. Those who are seeking a position, develop a resume that is circulated throughout the church network; participate in a series of interviews; accept an offer and sign a contract. A congregation hopes for a wide pool of applicants in order to choose the best. Likewise, prospective applicants seek the best possible openings with the most advantages in work conditions, pay and benefits.
Many times a congregation will see this process as simply the way to hire a priest to do the job needed in the same way a company manager finds an employee. The problem is that if a church “hires” a worker, they get an employee who will just do a “job.” As long as both parties are satisfied, the individual will stay as long as the situation warrants, or until that person finds another position that offers better career possibilities.
However, for the church, it is not simply a matter of hiring a worker for a job. For the worker, it is not just finding a good job in a good church. A “call” involves prayerful, mutual discernment on the part of the congregation, the vestry, the search committee and potential candidates to seek the will, wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Throughout Scripture, individuals were “called” into God’s service. The church looks for the individual who best fits the requirements outlined in a profile. But more importantly, issuing a “call” to a priest is offering an invitation to be in relationship with the parish community. In responding to a “call,” a priest is living into his or her ordination vows to love and serve the Body of Christ. This is not merely an employee-employer agreement, but a mutual commitment to one another in the service of Christ.
In the service of the Celebration of a New Ministry in the Book of Common Prayer, the following Collect (p. 560) expresses the relationship between the parish and the new priest:
Everliving God, strengthen and sustain N., that with patience and understanding he/she may love and care for your people; and grant that together they may follow Jesus Christ, offering you their gifts and talents; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
The Prayer for the Election of a Bishop or other Minister (p. 818) is also helpful:
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Profile Committee has Been Appointed!
At the June 11th Vestry meeting, the following people were appointed to serve on the Profile Committee as we begin the process in calling a new rector: Shauna Backus, Mary Feltrup, Andrea Feist, Ed Leonard, Conrad Lee, Dave Hoffmann, and Davindia Steele. Shauna has agreed to chair the committee, and she will be in touch with Paula Franck who has been asked by the Bishop to guide the team in its work. Paula will meet with the team in the next few weeks to explain the steps they will take in discerning a new direction for St. Margaret’s, and then the real work will begin. Please know that all parishioners will be asked to give input as to your wishes for the church going forward. When the junior and senior wardens spoke with Paula, she was clear that this is a process of discernment that takes time. We ask for your patience and prayers in the months ahead.

At the May 14th Vestry meeting, the Canon to the Ordinary, the Rev. Dr. Marda Steedman-Sanborn gave an overview of the process to call a new rector. The Vestry responsibilities in this process include appointing members to three committees: A Profile, a Search (or Call) and a Transition committee. To start the process, the vestry is seeking seven people to serve on the Profile committee. Their task will be to collect, compile and analyze information about the congregation and write a church profile for review by the Bishop’s office. The process is anticipated to take up to six months, although the duration depends primarily on how frequently the committee meets. Ideally, members of the committee will collectively have good writing and organizational skills as well as facilitation and/or data gathering experience. The vestry intends to appoint individuals to the Profile committee at its June 11th vestry meeting. Committee member diversity is important; interested individuals will be appointed depending upon their skill set, level of
interest and committee needs. The Search and Transition committees’ members will be appointed at a later date.
